Visit the Caribbean

The Caribbean is a cluster of tropical islands arching from the southern tip of Florida to the north coast of Venezuela. The Caribbean got its name from the Caribs, one of the dominant Amerindian groups inhabiting the region when the Europeans arrived in the late 15th century. Thanks to Christopher Columbus, the chain of islands is also referred to as the West Indies; Columbus thought he had landed in the Indies (then meaning all of South and East Asia) when he had actually reached the Americas.

The Caribbean consists of the Antilles. The Greater (larger) Antilles bound the Caribbean Sea on the north, and the Lesser (smaller) Antilles (including the Windward and Leeward Islands), on the south, and east, with the Bahamas in the northeast. Bermuda lies much farther to the north, in the Atlantic Ocean, and is sometimes included in the West Indies.

The region comprises 28 independent states, territories, overseas departments, and dependencies. Each island (or country) is unique and diverse in its geography, culture and people. The geography ranges from lush volcanic mountainous landscapes to golden coral sand beaches; from crashing Atlantic surf to tranquil turquoise waters. With a total population of 38 million, four official languages, and a range of ‘Creole’ dialects spoken in some of the islands, Caribbean culture is a pot pourri of influences. European settlers (British, Dutch, Spanish, and French), East Indian and Chinese immigrants, and indigenous American-Indians all influence the culture. But descendants of African slaves make up the majority of the population. Caribbean art, music, food, and celebration are predominantly African.

Many of the islands have a multitude of pristine white sandy beaches that are embraced by the warm, clear waters of the Caribbean Sea. Rays of golden sunshine bathe the islands throughout the year, creating a warm climate that attracts visitors from all over the world. The colourful, picturesque scenery is enhanced by the lively, welcoming personalities of local inhabitants and communities of the islands.
