His eyes fixed on some exposed electrical wires in an uncovered wall socket, he added, quickly, “Just don’t touch me.”
I stood back.
A devilish smile formed at the corners of his mouth, as he reached across and grabbed the exposed wires. Bright blue sparks flew off the coarse fingers.
I boggled, watching the old man electrocuting himself, but strangely, that smile lingered on his face. I smelled burning flesh.
“Just don’t touch me!” he cautioned again.
His widening smile declared him unharmed.
“How on earth do you do that?” I asked, astounded.
“I have special powers, man. I can’t get shocked,” he responded, a hint of arrogance in his voice.
He released the smoking wires and opened his hands for my inspection. I could see black marks where the wires had been in contact with his coarse skin. An eerie feeling crept through my bones as I stared at the old man in his long, black overcoat with its upturned collar. Feeling an ominous tingle in my spine, I wondered whether my uncle knew this man at all.
