CHAPTER 1
IT’S LONELY at the top. That much I knew.
But nothing could have prepared me for the devastating loneliness that consumed me, eating away at my soul, my heart, that February afternoon of 2003.
Shoulders drooping with despair, nerves simmering with dread, motionless and unbreathing, I stood before my office window squinting past the dusty glass pane down on the sun-drenched street, a chaos of people.
A knot of grief tightened in my stomach as the belligerent shouts of placard-bearing protestors rang ominously in my ears.
“Enough is enough! Enough is enough!!”
“We not taking dat! We not taking dat!!”
Despite the coolness of the air-conditioned room, sweat dampened my body.
“Enough is enough! Enough is …!”
